What to Pack in Your Hospital Bag: A Doula’s Perspective

Bringing a new life into the world is an extraordinary journey, and having the right items in your hospital bag can make the experience more comfortable and enjoyable. As a doula, I’ve seen firsthand what items can make a significant difference during labor and delivery. Here’s a comprehensive list of essentials, including some often overlooked items that can provide comfort and convenience for you and your partner.

Essentials for Mom

  1. Comfortable Clothing

  • Robe and Slippers: A cozy robe and non-slip slippers can keep you comfortable during your stay.

  • Nursing Bras and Tops: Easy access for breastfeeding and comfort.

  • Loose, Comfortable Pants: Think yoga pants or maternity leggings.

  1. Toiletries

  • Chapstick: Hospitals can be dry, and your lips will thank you.

  • Toothbrush and Toothpaste: Freshening up can help you feel more human.

  • Face Wipes and Moisturizer: Quick and easy way to refresh yourself.

  1. Relaxation and Comfort

  • Eye Mask: Helpful for blocking out light and getting some rest.

  • Earplugs or Noise-Canceling Headphones: To drown out hospital noise and help you relax.

  • Essential Oils: Lavender or chamomile can be soothing (check hospital policies on aromatherapy).

  1. Health and Wellness

  • Birth Plan and Important Documents: Have copies of your birth plan, insurance information, and ID.

  • Prenatal Vitamins and Any Medications: Don’t forget to bring these with you.

Essentials for Labor

  1. Comfort Measures

  • Heating Pad or Rice Sock: For back pain relief.

  • Massage Tools: A tennis ball or handheld massager can work wonders.

  • Rebozo or Scarf: Useful for various comfort measures and positions during labor.

  1. Hydration and Nutrition

  • Water Bottle with Straw: Staying hydrated is crucial.

  • Snacks: Easy-to-eat, energy-boosting snacks like applesauce pouches, honey sticks, granola bars, and nuts.

  • Electrolyte Drinks: Coconut water or electrolyte packets can be very helpful.

  1. Entertainment and Distraction

  • Music Playlist: Create a calming playlist or one that pumps you up, depending on what you need.

  • Books or Magazines: Something to keep your mind occupied during early labor.

Essentials for Baby

  1. Clothing and Accessories

  • Newborn Outfits: Bring a few options for going home.

  • Swaddles and Blankets: Hospitals provide these, but you might want your own.

  1. Car Seat

  • Installed and Ready: Make sure you have your car seat installed in advance and bring it with you.

Essentials for Partner

  1. Comfort Items

  • Pillow and Blanket: Hospital pillows aren’t always comfortable.

  • Change of Clothes: Including comfortable shoes and a hoodie.

  1. Snacks and Drinks

  • Easy-to-Eat Snacks: Think trail mix, fruit, and protein bars.

  • Reusable Water Bottle: For staying hydrated.

  1. Entertainment and Essentials

  • Books, Magazines, or Tablet: For downtime.

  • Phone Charger: To keep in touch with family and friends and capture those first moments.

Miscellaneous

  1. Cash and Change

  • For Vending Machines and Parking: Sometimes cash is necessary.

  1. Important Documents

  • Insurance Information, IDs, Birth Plan Copies: Keep these organized in a folder or document holder.
